A Soft Square for the Heart of the Home

There’s no place I love more than the kitchen — where all taste, perfume, and laughter join together and make a sanctuary of life.
But the most beautiful kitchens are the ones with a personal touch — where something handmade hangs quietly near the stove, soft and steady.

This potholder is one of those pieces. A simple crochet square that holds more than heat — it holds the kind of satisfaction that only comes from making something yourself.

And since it’s such an easy project, I thought I’d share it with you — right here, as simple as tea.

🧶 Simple Crochet Potholder Pattern

Skill level: Very beginner-friendly
Technique: Crochet
Size: Flexible — the example starts with 26 stitches, but you can adjust
Note: Just be sure to use an even number of stitches.

🧵 Materials:

Materials:

·       DK weight cotton yarn (something sturdy, soft, and washable — like 100% cotton or a cotton blend)

·       Crochet hook (typically 4.0 mm for DK, or whatever gives a firm fabric)

·       Yarn needle for weaving in ends

·       Optional: leather strip or crocheted loop for hanging

🧵 Instructions:

1.   Foundation Row:
Chain 26 (or any even number, depending on your desired width).

2.   Row 1:

o   Start in the second chain from the hook.

o   Work 1 single crochet (sc), then 1 double crochet (dc) into the same stitch.

o   Skip one chain, then 1 sc + 1 dc in the next stitch.

o   Repeat this pattern (skip one, then sc + dc in the same stitch) to the end of the row.

o   The row should end with just one single crochet.

3.   Turn your work.

4.   Row 2 and onward:

o   Begin with 1 sc + 1 dc in the first stitch.

o   Skip one stitch, then again 1 sc + 1 dc in the next.

o   Repeat to the end. End with 1 sc.

5.   Continue until the piece is a square or the size you like — usually around 20 x 20 cm is good for a potholder.

6.   Finishing:

o   Cut the yarn, weave in ends.

o   You can add a small leather or crocheted loop in one corner to hang it if you wish.Acknowledging progress keeps you motivated and builds momentum.

I hope you enjoy making your own version of this soft, simple piece.
If you do, I’d love to see it — tag me or just send a message.
More quiet patterns and soft thoughts are on their way.

Free pattern, yes. But if you spill something while using it — that part is on you.
